Maria Artemis at Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia
“Events That Rhyme,” an exhibition of sculptures and video by Maria Artemis at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, coincides with the debut of the Atlanta artist’s latest public art project, a fountain/memorial in Center Hill Park. Both, which are discussed in a review in the AJC, deal with materials and concerns that will be familiar to those who have followed her 25-year career.
“Hermion” (below), the standout work, exemplifies the artist’s deft handling of diverse materials and the poetry that can result. The first piece in the show, it introduces the boat and water as running themes.

In a magical moment from a lovely but ultimately tedious video, an evanescent image hovers in the air, courtesy of the water droplets emitted by the mister.
The show closes out this round of the museum’s Working Artist Project, funded by the Charles Loridans Foundation. MOCAGA Director Annette Cone-Skelton promises an announcement about its future very soon.
