I haven't yet seen a play that bothered me so much with its subject that I walked out. But I generally do enough research on what I am going to see that I know what the topics are going to be. What suprises me is people who go to see "Spring Awakening" expecting "South Pacific."
For anybody: Were you ever so shocked by something at the theater that you left early?

You're right - there is a lot to be said for pure entertainment! I love that, too! And I don't mean to say that one should stay put when seriously discomforted... I personally relish being pushed and pulled... so it was RIGHT up my alley!

Jenny, I sort of agree about theater being best when it makes us uncomfortable, although I would like to leave room for theater that is pure entertainment, like "Much Ado About Nothing."
I also don't want to be the Art Police and tell theater patrons they have to sit and watch a show that makes them squirm if that's not what they are into. But to the main point, I felt challenged by "SA," and was glad for it.

I had the distinct privilege of seeing SA on Broadway and thought it was fantastic. With regard to the subject matter, it was an amazing illustration of the adage, "The more things change, the more they stay the same".
The beauty of theatre is its provocation of the heart, mind and soul. Theatre (art, in general) is at its best when we are made to feel uncomfortable. It means we're experiencing something. Imagine that.

Truth be told, I have left at intermission myself when the play wasn't good enough to stick around. But I had a feeling the folks who left felt it was a little stronger material than they wanted to see. Hey, that's their right too.
