ArtsCriticATL has learned that Louise Nevelson’s “Dawn Forest,” a multi-part installation in the lobby of the Georgia-Pacific Center, is leaving Atlanta.
Its owners, Georgia-Pacific LLC and MetLife, have donated the piece, said to be the late artist’s largest installation, to the Naples Museum of Art in Florida. The monochrome assemblage, which has stood in the lobby for more than 20 years, will be installed in the museum’s entrance lobby in October.
Rumors about the deaccessioning of the piece have been circulating for some time, including word that it had been offered to the High Museum of Art.
More to come ….

What a shame that this public work of art by a seminal artist is so undervalued here that it has to leave the ATL to find a permanent home.
One of LN’s grandchildren lives in FLA (her great-granddaughter lives in Atlanta). I wonder if that has any connection to the work’s new home.

Hmmmm…I didn’t even know it was here, as I am fairly new to Atlanta, so now I will have to go and see it before it leaves. How sad…

The installation at Georgia Pacific has been a relatively unknown jewel, but it belonged on any art tour of the city. I can only hope that GP wil keep up the fine tradition andl replace it with an equally ambitious piece of contemporary artwork, in wood of course.

Very sad to see it leave Atlanta. The work is quite remarkable.

So WHY is Georgia-Pacific getting rid of it? It fits the lobby space so well.

Is it still at GP? When will it be taken down?
